Just an Opinion

We had a discussion today in my Commonwealth class about equality and freedom of individuals. What is equality? What freedom? Are they one and the same, and how can a people be considered free or equal to one another? … As usual, I kept silent and didn't share my opinion, so I'm writing it here. For me.
I think equality and freedom are two different things. Equality is a property of the public, the equality of the people regardless to what religion, race, or gender they are. Freedom is something personal. To be free is a matter of the individual's perception of the idea of freedom. To explain, a non Muslim may consider Islam to be oppressive and restricting to one's freedom, but devoted Muslim would think an issue, such as the segregation of the sexes, to be a principle of ethic and conviction. He wouldn't find it to be despotic or unjust.
I guess equality is way out of reach, and freedom is usually abused or taken for granted :/
